The newly commenced “AHRO Small Drug Molecules Initiative” will work hard to become one of the leaders in small drug molecules in the world. This was promised by Prof Abubakar Yaro (below) who would be leading the project. The project’s aim is to promote the discovery of small molecules that would be used in modulating biological processes with the potential to impact diseases. The initiative which is hosted by the Joint Research Office based at AHRO Center for Academic Research will involve novel techniques among which are targeting essential proteins associated with disease pathogenesis, screening whole organisms, and natural products. “We intend to create a unique platform where the development of small drug molecules will be the central of what we research and we are going to work in partnership with both industry and academics” Prof Yaro added. Currently, the project is focusing on research on repurposing of drugs of certain disease conditions. After, clinical studies would be undertaken across West Africa.
